What exactly constitutes consulting? Do NOT be turned off by this big word. In fact, consulting can offer you great profits!
Let's say you have had experience working in an accounting firm before. ANd you see certain practices of the banking industry that is detrimental to their bottom line profit. What do you do? SImply approach them, highlight this problem to them and offer your services.
HOWEVER
You must do due research on that company first. Why? Well, if you simply highlight the problem without showing that you understand the company culture and preferences, then you are setting up for a disaster. The company will simply engage another expert to rectify the problem. But if you come in prepared, highlight the problem, show how you can help them, and why they should choose you, it makes the decision process THAT much easier for the decision makers! Also, make sure you speak directly to the decision maker and not their subordinates. Subordinates HATE the idea of extra work!
IN SHORT, IF YOU HAVE HAD EXPERIENCE IN ANY FIELD WHATSOEVER, AND FEEL THAT THINGS CAN BE IMPROVED IN A COMPANY WITHIN YOUR FIELD OF EXPERTISE AND KNOWLEDGE, YOU CAN AND WILL PROFIT!
I will give you an example. A friend of mine used to run a carpet business. He complained that he had a website, yet it does not seem to boost his business whatsoever! I looked at his site, and concluded one thing. His website was poorly designed, poorly structured navigationally. IT WAS NOTHING MORE THAN A CALLING CARD OR AN ONLINE FLYER!
What use is a website if nobody visits it, right? So i offered him some consulting for FREE (of course, if the party is not your friend, you should not do the same)
What i did was revamp his website, generate some traffic to his site via facebooking, twitting, and other social media. I also designed for him affordable flyers to be placed in high net worth residentials in Katong and East areas. Over 2 weeks, his business jumped by a whole 200%!
Another time, a maid agency complained to me that they paid www.rednano.sg $2000 to be featured in their search engine. Paying me consultancy fees, i had to remind them this was foolish. This is because the BULK of people use GOOGLE to search for products and services, not rednano.sg or altavista or yahoo anymore!
Firstly, i focued his efforts on the google platform. Then i implemented some search engine optimisation to enable jim to obtain natural search rankings, and also PPC (pay-per-click) which is a great way to generate qualified and targeted visitors. i also renamed his domain name so that the branding is better. He paid me $2300 for consultancy fees, but his mthly income from running this agency TRIPLED. Truly worth it.
My point is that, if you think you can offer companies your services that will benefit them, DO IT! They will profit and so shall you! IF they like you enough, they may even employ you on a long term, basis, perhaps 5 k a mth payroll. Imagine having FIVE such companies a mth!
